A. CD-ROM caching
=================
To increase the speed of your program, you should use
SMARTDRV.EXE's CD-ROM caching. This option is available to
DOS 6.2. Here are the steps to enable CD-ROM caching setup:
1. In your "AUTOEXEC.BAT" file, Make sure that the CD-ROM
extensions program, CorelCDX or MSCDEX, is loaded before
SMARTDRV. For example:
C:\BIN\MSCDEX.EXE /D:MSCD001 /M:10
C:\WINDOWS\SMARTDRV.EXE /X /L 2048
2. Give SMARTDRV.EXE the default cache size of 2048K as shown in
the example above.
B. Improving Performance
========================
If you notice that your game is running slowly, setting your
video driver to 256 color mode may improve performance. For
further information on setting color mode, refer to the documentation
provided by your video card manufacturer.
C. Troubleshooting
==================
1. Computer is accessing the hard drive too frequently
------------------------------------------------------
If your computer appears to be accessing the hard drive
too frequently, you may want to reduce your Windows cache
size in order to increase your available memory.
For Windows 3.1 systems, add the following to your
AUTOEXEC.BAT file.
c:\WINDOWS\SMARTDRV.EXE 2048 128 /V
For Windows 3.11 systems, do the following:
1. From Program Manager, open the group named "Main".
2. Double click on the icon named "Control Panel".
3. From within the Control Panel, double click the icon
named "Enhanced".
4. A window named "Enhanced" appears. Click the
"Virtual Memory..." button.
5. A window named "Virtual Memory" appears. Click the
"Change>>" button.
6. At the bottom of the window, click the "use 32-bit
File Access" check box if it's not already checked.
7. Adjust the cache size to 128(K).
8. Click the "OK" button.
9. You are prompted to restart Windows. Click the
"Restart Windows" button.
As a general rule for 3.1 and 3.11 Windows systems,
allowing your swap file to be the same size as your RAM
helps to optimize this application. For example, a machine
with 4 MB RAM should have a swapfile of 4096K. To change
the swapfile size, follow steps 1 to 5 described above and
change the number box named "New Size" to the swapfile
size you want to use.
2. Can't set sound volume from The Interactive Alphabet
------------------------------------------------------
Not all PC sound boards support programmed volume
adjustment. If your sound board doesn't support volume
adjustment, changing the volume setting in the option dialog
box has no effect on the sound. You must use the volume
control on the sound board
3. Problems with animations not displaying properly
---------------------------------------------------
If you're experiencing video display problems when animations
are played, you may need to contact the manufacturer of your
video card for updated video drivers.
4. Getting 256 color warning while using 256 colors
---------------------------------------------------
If you're using a video card that allows you to change color
and resolution settings without restarting Windows, you may
get a 256 color warning dialog at game startup even though
you seem to be displaying 256 colors. To avoid this warning,
disable any quick resolution setting utilities when running
in 256 color mode. See your video card documentation for
further information.
