  4. Welcome to The Interactive Alphabet for Windows, part of the 
  5. Corel CD Home Series.
  6.  
  7. This document provides important information regarding The 
  8. Interactive Alphabet for Windows that wasn't available when the
  9. jewel case insert was printed.  Please take the time to read 
  10. this through.

  32. A. CD-ROM caching
  33. =================
  34.  
  35. To increase the speed of your program, you should use
  36. SMARTDRV.EXE's CD-ROM caching.  This option is available to
  37. DOS 6.2.  Here are the steps to enable CD-ROM caching setup:
  38.  
  39. 1. In your "AUTOEXEC.BAT" file, Make sure that the CD-ROM
  40.    extensions program, CorelCDX or MSCDEX, is loaded before 
  41.    SMARTDRV.  For example:
  42.  
  43.         C:\BIN\MSCDEX.EXE /D:MSCD001 /M:10
  44.  
  45.         C:\WINDOWS\SMARTDRV.EXE /X /L 2048
  46.  
  47. 2. Give SMARTDRV.EXE the default cache size of 2048K as shown in
  48.    the example above.

  52. B. Improving Performance
  53. ========================

  55. If you notice that your game is running slowly, setting your
  56. video driver to 256 color mode may improve performance.  For
  57. further information on setting color mode, refer to the documentation
  58. provided by your video card manufacturer.

  62. C. Troubleshooting
  63. ==================

  65. 1. Computer is accessing the hard drive too frequently
  66. ------------------------------------------------------

  68.   If your computer appears to be accessing the hard drive 
  69.   too frequently, you may want to reduce your Windows cache
  70.   size in order to increase your available memory.
  71.  
  72.   For Windows 3.1 systems, add the following to your 
  73.   AUTOEXEC.BAT file.
  74.     c:\WINDOWS\SMARTDRV.EXE 2048 128 /V
  75.  
  76.   For Windows 3.11 systems, do the following:
  77.     1. From Program Manager, open the group named "Main".
  78.     2. Double click on the icon named "Control Panel".
  79.     3. From within the Control Panel, double click the icon
  80.        named "Enhanced".
  81.     4. A window named "Enhanced" appears. Click the 
  82.         "Virtual Memory..." button.
  83.     5. A window named "Virtual Memory" appears.  Click the 
  84.         "Change>>" button.
  85.     6. At the bottom of the window, click the "use 32-bit
  86.        File Access" check box if it's not already checked.
  87.     7. Adjust the cache size to 128(K).
  88.     8. Click the "OK" button.
  89.     9. You are prompted to restart Windows.  Click the
  90.        "Restart Windows" button.
  91.  
  92.     As a general rule for 3.1 and 3.11 Windows systems,
  93.     allowing your swap file to be the same size as your RAM
  94.     helps to optimize this application.  For example, a machine
  95.     with 4 MB RAM should have a swapfile of 4096K.  To change
  96.     the swapfile size, follow steps 1 to 5 described above and 
  97.     change the number box named "New Size" to the swapfile
  98.     size you want to use.

  101. 2. Can't set sound volume from The Interactive Alphabet 
  102. ------------------------------------------------------

  104.   Not all PC sound boards support programmed volume
  105.   adjustment.  If your sound board doesn't support volume
  106.   adjustment, changing the volume setting in the option dialog
  107.   box has no effect on the sound. You must use the volume 
  108.   control on the sound board

  111. 3. Problems with animations not displaying properly
  112. ---------------------------------------------------

  114.   If you're experiencing video display problems when animations
  115.   are played, you may need to contact the manufacturer of your 
  116.   video card for updated video drivers.

  118. 4. Getting 256 color warning while using 256 colors
  119. ---------------------------------------------------
  120.  
  121.   If you're using a video card that allows you to change color
  122.   and resolution settings without restarting Windows, you may
  123.   get a 256 color warning dialog at game startup even though
  124.   you seem to be displaying 256 colors. To avoid this warning,
  125.   disable any quick resolution setting utilities when running
  126.   in 256 color mode. See your video card documentation for
  127.   further information.
